Burgruine Klingenberg

Burgruine Klingenberg, Medieval castle ruin in Sankt Thomas am Blasenstein, Austria.

Burgruine Klingenberg is a castle ruin situated on a steep rocky outcrop in Austria at 707 meters elevation. The remains clearly show a three-level structure with an outer courtyard and bailey, with massive walls still demonstrating its former defensive purpose.

The castle was founded in the 11th century by the Perg-Machland noble family and later passed to the Clam-Velburg dynasty. Count Ulrich of Clam disappeared during the 1217 Crusades, marking a turning point in the fortress's history.

The name refers to its position on a ridge overlooking the valley, where the fortress once controlled the surrounding land. Visitors can see today how the strong walls reflect the importance this location held for regional power.

The ascent to the ruin follows a hiking trail with significant elevation gain through steep terrain. The visit is best undertaken in dry conditions and requires sturdy footwear and sure-footedness.

A remarkable feature is the deep well that originally reached over 100 meters into the mountain and has been partially cleared. This shaft demonstrates the engineering skill of the fortress builders and how important water supply was for fortified structures.
