Burgruine Lobenstein, Oberneukirchen

Burgruine Lobenstein stands on a hilltop in Upper Austria with the remains of a medieval defensive structure clearly visible. A distinctive seven-sided residential tower rises from the stone fragments, surrounded by preserved wall sections that outline the original fortification.

The castle was first recorded in 1242 and served as the seat of the local lords for centuries. A change of ownership to the Starhemberg family in the 14th century reflected shifting power in the region.

The ruins display defensive structures built to protect this mountainous region during medieval times. Walking around the site, you can see how the tower and walls once controlled the valley below.

The site is easily accessible with well-preserved structures that are safe to explore across multiple areas. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and paths cross over old stone remains and hillside terrain.

In the early 1900s, the tower provided shelter for Michael Kitzmüller for many years until his story ended in tragedy. His mysterious death within the ruins became a part of the castle's local memory.
