Burgruine Mitterberg

Burgruine Mitterberg is a castle ruin on a hilltop near Perg in Upper Austria, with partially standing walls and foundations. From this elevated position, you can see across the surrounding region, and the remaining stonework shows how rooms and defensive structures were originally arranged.

The fortress was founded around 1165 as a defensive stronghold to monitor and protect the surrounding region. It remained an important position in the medieval defense network of the area for several centuries.

Today, hikers and curious visitors explore the ruins to experience how people once lived on this elevated spot overlooking the landscape. The remaining stone structures tell you something about daily life in a medieval fortification far removed from settlements below.

You can reach the ruins on foot via marked hiking trails that lead up from the village below and are fairly easy to follow. The paths are passable throughout the year, though sturdy shoes are recommended because the ground is uneven and slopes upward in places.

The remaining stone walls show how medieval builders cleverly used the natural slope of the hill to anchor and stabilize the structures. This skillful adaptation to the terrain is one reason why certain sections have survived through the centuries despite weathering and neglect.
