Prandegg Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Schönau im Mühlkreis, Austria.
Prandegg Castle is a ruin that stretches some 150 meters along a hilltop between two valleys, shaped by heavy fortification walls. A round tower about 23 meters high dominates the complex and defines its profile.
The castle was first documented in 1287 and changed ownership many times over the centuries. In 1823 it passed to the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
The name Prandegg comes from local dialect words related to forest clearing by fire and the large rock formations found on the site. These origins show how people historically used and shaped the landscape.
The ruins are open to visitors at no cost and require no special skills to explore. A nearby tavern offers meals and sleeping cabins for those wanting to stay longer.
The site offers wide views over two valleys and shows through its position how important elevated locations were for controlling the surrounding land. From different angles, the ruins look completely different depending on how light hits the walls.
