Hammersmith Riedlhammer, Industrial hammer mill in Gutau, Austria.
Hammersmith Riedlhammer is a hammer mill in Gutau, Upper Austria, made up of several buildings including a late baroque manor house with stucco details and traditional wooden ceilings. The grounds bring together residential and workshop structures in a rural setting.
The forge was already operating before 1609 and was one of the recognized scythe forges in Upper Austria at the time. In 1912, the site was converted into a power plant while its older buildings were kept standing.
The forge produced scythes marked with a double eagle seal that were exported to Russia and the Balkan regions. This craft shaped the identity of the place for centuries.
The site is easy to walk around, and sturdy shoes are a good idea since the different buildings are spread across an outdoor area. Visiting in dry weather makes it easier to take in the full layout of the grounds.
When the Kindler family took over the complex in 1775, they also acquired nearby Tannbach Castle and absorbed the neighboring Stampfenhammer forge into their holdings. This made the property one of the largest operations of its kind in the region at the time.
