Hammersmith Riedlhammer, Industrial hammer mill in Gutau, Austria.
Hammersmith Riedlhammer is an industrial hammer mill in Gutau with several buildings including a late baroque manor house decorated with stucco elements and traditional wooden ceilings. The complex preserves its original structures surrounded by green spaces.
The forge began operations before 1609 and was one of 42 recognized scythe forges in Upper Austria during the early 17th century. In 1912 the complex was transformed into a power plant while its historical buildings were preserved.
The forge produced scythes marked with a double eagle seal that were exported to Russia and the Balkan regions. This craft shaped the identity of the place for centuries.
The site is relatively easy to access with green spaces around the grounds inviting exploration. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and allow time to view the various historical structures.
The Kindler family took over the complex in 1775 and expanded it significantly, acquiring Tannbach Castle and even taking control of the neighboring Stampfenhammer forge. This consolidation made the property one of the region's major industrial complexes.
