Burgruine Rabenstein

Burgruine Rabenstein is a medieval castle ruin set on a wooded hill north of the Mellitz district, with remains of a chapel, a tower, and defensive walls. The ruins occupy a large area and offer wide views of the Virgen valley from their elevated position.

The fortress was built around 1200 and served for several centuries as the residence of Virgen's official representative. It was abandoned in the early 1700s and gradually fell into ruin.

The chapel inside honors Saint Leonard, showing how faith was woven into daily life at this fortress. The stone walls and tower reveal a time when castles served as both homes and spiritual centers for those who lived there.

Hiking trails from Virgen-Dorf lead to the ruins, with parking available near the village starting point. The walk climbs uphill through forest and requires a moderate level of fitness.

Excavations at the site uncovered Roman coins and jewelry, indicating people used this hilltop long before the medieval castle was built. These discoveries suggest the location held strategic importance across multiple centuries.
