Burgruine Ried, Sieghartskirchen, Medieval castle ruins in Sieghartskirchen, Austria.
Burgruine Ried is a castle site in Sieghartskirchen situated at about 320 meters elevation in the Vienna Woods. From the original structures, a Romanesque round tower, sections of the defensive walls, and fragments of the outer fortifications remain standing.
The first written mention dates to 1280 when the fortress already existed. The Ried family took control in 1286 and left their name to the site, while by the 1600s the location was being used as a stone quarry.
The ruin carries the name of the Ried family, who ruled from this location and exercised control over the surrounding valley. Today visitors can see how medieval nobility displayed their power through the physical construction of fortress walls.
The site is reachable via several walking paths and connects to nearby routes such as the trail to Paradeis monastery and the Troppberg observation point. Plan a visit on a clear day, as the location is quite exposed with limited shade.
A dedicated association has worked since 2009 to protect and study the site, conducting regular archaeological digs. These efforts continually reveal new details about medieval building techniques and daily life at this elevated location.
