Sancta Maria in Paradyso, Medieval monastery ruins in Tullnerbach, Austria

Sancta Maria in Paradyso is a ruined Franciscan monastery on the western slope of the Weideck near Tullnerbach. Of the single-nave late Gothic church, parts of the nave walls and a little of the choir survive above ground, including the springing of a three-bay brick vault. Two octagonal sandstone column bases of the west gallery and a brick floor laid in a herringbone pattern were uncovered in 2013.

Gabriel von Verona founded the Franciscan monastery around 1440 with support from the Habsburgs. Ottoman forces destroyed it in 1529, killing 22 monks in the process.

The church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Lawrence. In 1464 the Franciscan provincial chapter met here and re-elected Gabriel Rangoni as vicar general; a memorial tablet in the Neulengbach Franciscan monastery, founded in 1623, recalls the lost house. The ruin later served neighbouring villages as a source of building stone.

The ruin lies at the edge of Tullnerbach's municipal area, on the western slope of the Weideck above the Riederbach valley, near the border with Sieghartskirchen. Remains of the nave, choir and a small outbuilding lie on uneven, partly overgrown ground; the steep slope west of the nave holds a substructure and a buttress fragment. Sturdy footwear helps.

Excavations from 2013 challenged earlier theories about the choir structure and revealed a semicircular apse that was added during a later construction phase. This discovery changed how we understand the building's original design and later modifications.
