Sancta Maria in Paradyso, Medieval monastery ruins in Tullnerbach, Austria
Sancta Maria in Paradyso is a monastery ruin located in Tullnerbach within the Wienerwald region. The remains include sections of a three-bay brick vault, a western portal, and fragments of a rectangular outbuilding.
Gabriel von Verona founded the Franciscan monastery around 1440 with support from the Habsburgs. Ottoman forces destroyed it in 1529, killing 22 monks in the process.
The monastery church displays late Gothic architectural features with a sandstone western gallery and octagonal column bases. The patterned brick flooring that once covered the floor shows the skilled craftsmanship of the builders.
The site is accessible to visitors, though it exists in a ruined state. Those wanting a full overview should allow time to walk the grounds and wear sturdy footwear.
Excavations from 2013 challenged earlier theories about the choir structure and revealed a semicircular apse that was added during a later construction phase. This discovery changed how we understand the building's original design and later modifications.
