Burgruine Waisenberg, Medieval castle ruin in Völkermarkt, Austria.
Burgruine Waisenberg is a medieval castle ruin perched on a limestone rock formation northwest of Völkermarkt, featuring a square main structure with a fortification wall from the 16th century. The site spreads across the rock plateau, revealing multiple building foundations and architectural layers from different periods of construction.
The castle was built in the 12th century and long controlled access to the Görtschitztal valley and mining operations at Hüttenberg. A fire around 1790 triggered its decline, after which the structure gradually deteriorated.
The ruins display architectural traces from Romanesque through Renaissance periods, visible as you explore the structures on the hilltop. The two-story Renaissance gate tower with its spiral staircase shows the craftsmanship of earlier builders and helps visitors understand the different construction phases the site experienced.
The site sits on a limestone rock and is best reached on foot, with a fairly steep climb from Völkermarkt. Visiting requires sturdy shoes and caution, especially in wet weather, as the ground is uneven and parts of the structure are still undergoing restoration work.
The ruin is part of a group of three neighboring castles known as the Trixner Castles, which together formed a former defense system. Their locations at different elevations allowed visual communication between the structures.
