Villa Wartholz, Historical villa in Reichenau an der Rax, Austria
Villa Wartholz is a three-story building featuring towers and a large front balcony, designed in the 19th-century historicist style. The structure displays characteristic details of that period, with elaborate facade elements and a formal layout.
Built between 1870 and 1872 by architect Heinrich von Ferstel, it first served as a residence for Archduke Karl Ludwig, brother of Emperor Franz Joseph. The building later became home to Emperor Charles I and his family during a significant period in their lives.
Since 2008, the house has become a center for literature, hosting an annual writing competition that draws participants from the region. This role has turned it into a gathering place for local writers and literature enthusiasts.
The building is open for guided tours with regular public visits available. Advance booking is recommended for special events and private functions.
A son of the emperor was born within these walls and spent his early years here. The family's presence left lasting marks on this place's past.
