Reichenau an der Rax

Reichenau an der Rax is a market municipality in Neunkirchen District situated at the foot of the Rax mountain range along the Schwarza river. The settlement spreads across a large area and combines rural spaces with structures nestled in the river valley.

Reichenau Castle was founded in 1256 and shaped the area's early history as a feudal seat. Duke Otto IV granted the castle to Neuberg monastery in 1333, establishing its role as a regional power center.

The place transformed from a mining and forestry center into a preferred destination for Viennese nobility during the nineteenth century. Today you can see this shift reflected in the mix of traditional village structures and the elegant buildings from that era.

The place is easily accessible from Vienna and offers access to hiking trails in the mountains and outdoor activities along the river valley. Visitors can find accommodations and restaurants throughout the year.

The Raxseilbahn cable car was built in 1926 and stands as Austria's first aerial tramway, giving the place a significant role in transport history. This technical achievement connected the area directly to modern tourism developments of that era.
