Schneeberg, Mountain massif in Lower Austria, Austria
Schneeberg is a mountain massif in Lower Austria reaching 2,076 meters in elevation with steep limestone slopes on three sides. The range extends across several municipalities and features a complex structure of peaks and valleys.
The massif became connected in 1873 through construction of a pipeline to Vienna that supplied the capital with water. This infrastructure played an important role in the region's development and remains in use today.
The mountain draws people throughout the year who walk and climb on its limestone paths and trails. Visitors use the various routes to experience the landscape and views across the surrounding areas.
A rack-and-pinion railway runs to a station at 1,800 meters from which various walking routes of different difficulty levels begin. The trails are well-maintained and suit both experienced hikers and those new to walking.
The mountain is the easternmost and northernmost Alpine peak above 2,000 meters and can be seen from Vienna and Bratislava. The view extends up to 180 kilometers away, making it a visible landmark from great distances.
