Südbahnhotel Semmering

Südbahnhotel Semmering is a historic building with characteristic half-timbered construction and a distinctive turret, situated at about 1000 meters elevation. Its distinctive silhouette with projecting bays and green roof stands out against the mountain landscape.

Wilhelm Ritter von Flattich built this first hotel of the locality in 1882, marking Semmering's emergence as a travel destination. The building appeared shortly after completion of the Southern Railway from Vienna to Trieste, which made the mountain region newly accessible.

The hotel's name references the Southern Railway that opened Semmering to travelers and continues to define the valley's identity. Visitors can still sense the Belle Époque elegance that drew artists and thinkers here during its heyday.

The hotel is reached via the road through Semmering that winds through the mountain landscape and connects it to nearby towns. The surroundings offer different activities depending on the season, from hiking in summer to winter sports in the colder months.

The hotel was among the first in the Alps to feature a heated indoor swimming pool, allowing guests to bathe regardless of weather. The glazed loggias were also innovative for the time, protecting visitors from harsh mountain winds.
