Schloss Traun, Medieval castle in Traun, Austria
Schloss Traun is a castle in Traun, Upper Austria, built with three stories, four corner towers, and eight windows along its main side. The building sits at 274 meters above sea level and welcomes visitors who come to tour its rooms and attend events held on the grounds.
The castle began around 1120 as a fortified site surrounded by water channels and was rebuilt from the ground up in the late 1500s. It received its current Baroque appearance in 1725.
The chapel inside carries the name of Saint John and remains central to visitors who tour the building, mixing religious and architectural interest in one space. This room shows how the building has served people across different eras, combining spiritual use with the visual heritage that greets anyone entering.
The grounds are easily reached by public transportation from major cities in the region and offer regular guided tours along with cultural events. Visitors should check ahead about which areas are accessible, since conditions change with the season and scheduled activities.
Until 1884, the grounds were surrounded by a water-filled moat that was later filled in to convert parts of the building into living spaces. This transformation completely changed how the site functioned, turning it from a defended stronghold into a residential home.
