Pi, Art installation at Karlsplatz subway station, Vienna, Austria
Pi is an art installation in the Opernpassage corridor of Karlsplatz subway station, extending 130 meters with mathematical constants and statistical data in reflective cases. The work presents information in successive sections that visitors encounter while walking through.
Canadian artist Ken Lum created this installation between 2005 and 2006 working with the SORA Institute for data collection and presentation. The project emerged as part of redesigning the Karlsplatz transit hub.
The installation connects mathematics with social statistics, showing information about Vienna's population and migration patterns through glass displays. Visitors can observe how numbers reflect the city's everyday life and diversity.
The installation is located in the Opernpassage corridor connecting the subway station with the Naschmarkt area and is freely accessible during operating hours. The passage is easy to navigate without special requirements.
The installation features real-time counters displaying various data points about Vienna, from population numbers to the quantity of Wiener Schnitzel consumed daily. These constantly changing figures give visitors a living sense of how the city functions.
