Obernberger See

Obernberger See is a mountain lake in Obernberg am Brenner at 1,590 meters (5,216 ft) elevation with two distinct basins separated by rock formations. The water extends across both sections, creating a scenic setting framed by surrounding peaks and Alpine meadows.

A prehistoric rock slide separated the original waterbody into two distinct basins, shaping the lake as it exists today. This ancient geological event created the conditions for the construction of the Maria am See chapel much later.

The Maria am See chapel sits on a natural rock platform that hikers pass by regularly. This small mountain sanctuary with its wooden bridge shows how people have long created spiritual places within the Alpine landscape.

The lake is reached by a hiking trail of about 6 kilometers from the Waldesruh parking area, requiring several hours for a complete visit. Proper footwear and appropriate mountain clothing are essential, as weather conditions at this elevation can change quickly.

The water level of this lake shifts by up to 7 meters depending on the season, dramatically changing its appearance throughout the year. During spring snowmelt, the two normally separate basins temporarily connect as the water rises.
