Burgruine Steinschloß, Medieval castle ruin in Neumarkt in der Steiermark, Austria.
Burgruine Steinschloss is a medieval castle ruin perched on a rocky outcrop above Neumarkt in der Steiermark, in Austria. The remains include five defensive towers and Gothic vaults, spread across the cliff face.
The castle was built in the 12th century by the von Stein family and passed to the Abbey of St. Lambrecht in 1503 after the Liechtenstein nobles sold it. From that point on, the site slowly fell into disuse and decay.
The name Steinschloss simply means "stone castle" in German, which matches exactly what visitors see: a fortress built directly into the rock. The walls and the cliff seem to grow from the same material, making it hard to tell where the stone ends and the building begins.
Reaching the ruins requires a steep hike over rocky terrain, so sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are helpful. The path can become slippery in wet conditions, so checking the weather before setting out is a good idea.
A local castle association runs a mountain hut just below the ruins, open from May to October, where overnight stays are possible. This means visitors can experience the site at dawn or dusk, when the surroundings feel completely different from midday.
