Raggaschlucht, Natural monument in Flattach, Austria
Raggaschlucht is a narrow canyon in Carinthia with nearly vertical rock walls on both sides. The stream and its waterfalls flow through the 800-meter-long gorge, creating a dramatic passage below high cliffs.
The gorge became accessible to visitors in 1882 when wooden walkways were built along its walls. This made it one of Austria's earliest natural tourist destinations.
Local municipalities organize educational programs about the geological formations and water patterns within the gorge for students and researchers.
The walking route forms a loop with an elevation gain of about 200 meters and requires sturdy footwear. The steep descent through the forest demands careful footing and attention throughout.
The Raggabach stream plunges through a series of cascades totaling roughly 200 meters, with the main waterfall dropping about 20 meters. These falls give the gorge much of its striking character.
