Erzherzog-Carl-Kaserne, Military barracks in Donaustadt, Vienna, Austria
Erzherzog-Carl-Kaserne is a military complex in Donaustadt with four connected building blocks dating from the early 20th century. The structure was later completely repurposed and now houses 273 subsidized rental apartments on the renovated grounds.
The complex was built from 1910 to 1911 and received its name in 1912 to honor Archduke Charles of Austria-Teschen. During World War II, it served as a training center for Luftwaffe auxiliary personnel.
The grounds became a refuge for Hungarians fleeing Soviet invasion in 1956. This episode shaped local memory and shows how public buildings shift their purpose during crises.
The grounds are now integrated into a residential neighborhood with apartment buildings and public areas. Visitors can explore the architectural layout and walk through the various zones that make up the overall development.
Around 1,200 Viennese students were trained here as Luftwaffe auxiliaries during World War II. This episode reveals how deeply the war mobilized the city and the site played a significant role in wartime activities.
