Frankenburg

Frankenburg is a castle ruin in Austria situated on a hilltop at around 723 meters in elevation with remains from medieval times. Visible stone walls, old ditches, and the flat plateau reveal the original layout of this fortification.

The castle was first recorded in 1160 and served as a defensive installation along the border between Bavaria and surrounding regions. From 1511 onwards it lost its key role and was gradually abandoned.

The site connects to a 1625 peasant uprising when locals took a stand for their rights. This history shapes how people today understand and relate to this place through regular events held there.

The site is mainly accessible to hikers and offers opportunities to explore the surroundings. In good weather the paths around the ruins are easy to navigate, though sturdy footwear is recommended.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered finds that reveal rare traces of everyday life in medieval times. Among these discoveries are clay tiles bearing fingerprints and decorated ceramic pieces left by the craftspeople who worked on the fortification.
