Ampflwang coal railway

Ampflwang coal railway is a revived heritage line in Upper Austria that operates today as a working museum line. The route connects Ampflwang with the Timelkam network and passes through rolling countryside dotted with period stations and restored infrastructure.

The railway was built in 1924 to haul coal from local mines to main lines and became the backbone of the region's mining economy. After coal operations ended in 1995, railway enthusiasts rescued the line and restored it as a heritage attraction.

The location reflects its origins as a coal transport corridor that shaped the region's development. Visitors walking along the tracks can sense how vital rail transport was to the area's industrial past and daily rhythms.

Train rides operate mainly from July through September on weekends, letting visitors experience the railway during warmer months. It helps to arrive early, as the vintage trains have limited seating and popular dates fill up quickly.

The adjoining locomotive park displays a remarkable collection of steam engines and freight cars, including several well-preserved examples from the mining era. These metal relics offer an honest view of how grueling mining work was and how these machines shaped daily labor in the region.
