Elmaualm, Mountain hut in Werfenweng, Austria
Elmaualm is a mountain hut at 1533 meters elevation with a terrace offering views of Tennengebirge peaks and numerous mountains over 3000 meters. The building provides overnight accommodations for 20 people and terrace seating for around 80 visitors.
The hut was established in 1850 and has served as accommodation and a food stop for hikers exploring the western areas of Tennengebirge for more than 170 years. Its long history reflects the sustained importance of this location for mountain tourism in the region.
Local families rotate weekly to run the kitchen, preparing regional dishes like Elmau platters, Kaiserschmarren, homemade cakes, and traditional Pofesen. The food reflects recipes passed down through families who have managed the hut over time.
The hut operates from late May through October, making it accessible for most of the warm season. It works best as a stop along hiking routes in the area rather than as a standalone destination.
A ten-minute walk from the hut leads to Almkreuz, a viewpoint where you can see impressive peaks like Bischofsmütze, Hoher Dachstein, and Großglockner. This spot tends to be quieter than other popular hiking destinations in the area.
