Werfener Hochthron, Alpine summit in Tennengebirge Mountains, Salzburg, Austria
Werfener Hochthron is a limestone peak in the Tennengebirge range standing at about 2360 meters with sheer rock faces on all sides. The mountain offers several different climbing routes that wind through varied rocky terrain.
The peak was first summited in documented form in 1887 when climbers H. Heß and G. Diener tackled its challenging south ridge. This achievement marked the start of its importance in regional mountaineering history.
Local mountaineering traditions include annual gatherings at Werfener Hütte, where climbers share experiences and techniques for ascending the mountain paths.
The route starts at Gasthof Mahdegg parking area, from where about a 90-minute uphill walk leads to Werfener Hütte before the actual climbing sections begin. Sturdy boots and good head for heights are needed for the technical pitches.
A large wooden cross stands at the summit and is visible from great distances, giving the mountain a distinctive landmark quality. This structure has become a recognizable symbol across the surrounding region.
