Sternhaus, Heritage townhouse in Stadtplatz, Steyr, Austria.
The Sternhaus is a heritage townhouse at Stadtplatz in Steyr with a five-part facade and continuous central bay window. The front elevation features stone figures above second-story windows depicting human senses through carved details.
After the devastating city fire of 1727, the building underwent reconstruction with a late Baroque facade. The renovation preserved Gothic elements, especially the portal, which testifies to the site's earlier origins.
The entrance portal displays two birds of prey holding a golden star, symbolizing the iron trade that shaped Steyr's economy. This symbol connects visitors to the craft traditions that defined the city for centuries.
The building is located at Stadtplatz 12 and can be viewed from outside at any time. The facade and decorations are clearly visible from the plaza, allowing a relaxed examination without time constraints.
The facade creates an optical illusion by concealing the actual roof structure, making the building appear taller than it truly is. This architectural trick was a sophisticated way to maximize visual impact on the plaza.
