Hohe Kugel, Mountain summit in Fraxern, Austria
Hohe Kugel is a summit in the Bregenz Forest Mountains in Vorarlberg, Austria, sitting at about 1,645 meters (5,400 feet) above sea level. Several marked hiking trails lead to the top, passing through wooded sections and open alpine meadows.
The paths around Hohe Kugel began as connecting routes between Alpine villages in Vorarlberg. Over time, they were taken over by walkers and became the hiking trails that visitors use today.
The mountain sits close to the village of Fraxern and is used by locals as a destination for day walks. Those who reach the top find an open view over the Rhine Valley and the surrounding villages, which makes the climb feel worthwhile.
The main starting point is at the sports field parking area in Fraxern, where several trails begin. Proper footwear matters on the higher sections, and conditions can change quickly in the mountains regardless of the season.
On a clear day, four countries are visible from the top at the same time: Austria, Switzerland, Germany, and Liechtenstein. This makes it one of the few places in the Alps where you can look across so many borders in a single glance.
