Library of Melk Abbey, Baroque library in Melk, Austria.
The library showcases Baroque architecture with ornate wooden carvings, ceiling frescoes, and systematic book arrangements creating a harmonious artistic environment for scholarly study and contemplation.
Established in 1735 during the monastery's reconstruction, the library was expanded in 1768 with the addition of the Upper Library comprising two interconnected rooms accessible via spiral staircase.
The library houses approximately 100,000 volumes including 1,800 manuscripts and 750 incunabula, serving as an active research center for international scholars studying medieval and religious history.
Visitors can explore the main room and adjoining spaces displaying around 16,000 books during designated hours, with guided tours available and photography restrictions to preserve delicate materials.
In 2019, researchers discovered a fragment of medieval erotic poetry titled 'Der Rosendorn' dating to around 1300, predating previous estimates by approximately two hundred years and providing new insights into historical literature.
