Rosenalmbahn, Cable car system in Zell am Ziller, Austria
The Rosenalmbahn is a two-section cable car system that lifts passengers from the valley at 580 meters (1900 feet) to the mountain top at 1744 meters (5720 feet). An intermediate station in between allows riders to transfer, with about 86 cabins continuously moving along the route.
The cable car opened in 1995, connecting Zell am Ziller to the Zillertal Arena skiing areas and making the peaks more accessible to visitors. This connection turned the region into a year-round destination for mountain activities.
The cable car is woven into local alpine life, where residents and visitors share the same mountain routes across all seasons. Both skiers and hikers use these paths, making the mountain accessible to everyone throughout the year.
The cable car runs most frequently during peak summer and winter seasons, with reduced services during shoulder periods. Expect a journey of about 15 to 20 minutes from bottom to top, and wear comfortable shoes if you plan to hike or walk around the mountain station.
What sets this system apart is the mid-station design where cabins shift direction without stopping, allowing passengers to board and exit smoothly. This clever engineering means transfers happen fast without the usual delays at transfer points.
