Organo della fortezza di Kufstein, Pipe organ at Kufstein Fortress, Austria

The organ in Kufstein Fortress is a large musical instrument with over 4,300 pipes and 46 different registers. The keyboard sits over 100 meters away from the pipes, making this an unusually separated instrument.

This instrument was installed in 1931 as a memorial to soldiers who died in World War I. The daily musical performances were designed from the start as a form of remembrance for those who fell.

The organ plays daily at noon and its melodies travel across the valley, becoming part of the daily rhythm for people living nearby. Over the decades, this sound has become woven into the local experience of life in the region.

The best place to listen is the fortress courtyard below, where the sounds are clear and full. Plan your visit around midday when the instrument plays daily.

Because of the great distance between keyboard and pipes, there is a delay, meaning organists must press keys before the sound actually emerges. This requires special technique and lots of practice from whoever plays this instrument.
