Maria im Mösl

Maria im Mösl is a church building in the northern Salzburg region, standing on elevated ground where it replaced an earlier chapel that sat in a marshy area. The structure displays late Gothic features and underwent repairs following architectural modifications in 1758.

Construction of the current church began under Abbot Bernard of Michaelbeuern and received consecration from Bishop Berthold of Chiemsee in 1520. The relocation from the marshy site to elevated ground marked a turning point in this pilgrimage place's history.

The church holds a late Gothic statue of Mary with Child on its main altar, reflecting local devotion to Mary that has shaped the region. This artwork draws pilgrims who come here to express their faith and connect with centuries of prayer.

The church maintains regular opening hours and welcomes many visitors during Advent and Christmas for services and private reflection. The elevated location makes it easy to find, and visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding landscape from the hilltop.

A remarkable custom requires each newly appointed Archbishop of Salzburg to complete a pilgrimage on foot to this chapel as part of their inauguration ceremony. This tradition links the present day to a long history of spiritual humility.
