Mariagrüner Kirche, Graz

Mariagrüner Kirche, Graz, Baroque church in Graz, Austria

The Mariagrüner Kirche is a baroque house of worship in Graz featuring a Greek cross floor plan topped with a lantern-crowned dome. The south wall displays statues of Saints Joseph and Florian, and the interior preserves stained glass windows created in the 1890s.

The site developed from a vineyard established by Hans Friz around 1650, which he made available to Capuchin monks who built a chapel in 1663. Over time this became an established parish church serving the railway station area.

The church served as a spiritual refuge for railway workers and travelers passing through the station, creating a sense of connection between the building and daily life. The religious artworks inside reflect the faith practices of the local Catholic community that has gathered here for centuries.

The church is easily reached from the pedestrian area near the main station building in a quieter setting away from traffic. Visitors should know the building functions as an active chapel for worship services, so access depends on opening times and scheduled events.

Ludwig Bonaparte, the brother of Napoleon I, visited this church frequently between 1810 and 1814 while staying in Graz. His personal connection to the place led him to commission a monument commemorating the church's founding.
