Obermurau Castle

Obermurau Castle is a Renaissance fortress in Murau with symmetrical stone facades and multiple towers rising from a hilltop that overlooks the Mur River valley. The structure spans several levels and contains a picture gallery, kitchen, knight's hall, and chapel that visitors can tour.

An original castle stood on this site from 1232 until it was destroyed in the 1270s. The current structure was rebuilt in Renaissance style between 1628 and 1643.

The castle displays tapestries and furnishings from different periods that reflect how noble families lived within its walls across generations. These collections show the daily life and tastes of the wealthy residents who called this place home.

The castle is open to visitors only during specific months, so it is worth checking opening dates before planning a visit. Guided tours provide access to various rooms throughout the structure, so arriving early gives you time to explore thoroughly.

The castle remains a private residence of the Schwarzenberg family while simultaneously opening select areas to the public. This blend of private home and museum is uncommon and gives the place authentic character.
