Burgruine Rothenthurn

Burgruine Rothenthurn is a medieval fortified structure on elevated ground above Spittal an der Drau, featuring Renaissance architectural details in its stone walls. A chapel sits within its boundaries, and the ruins occupy a commanding position over the valley.

The ruins were first documented in 1478 when controlled by the Meinhardiner family, a prominent noble house of the region. The fortress later underwent transformations as defensive priorities shifted and residential uses grew more important.

The ruins reveal how this place transformed from a military stronghold into a noble residence, showing the changing ways aristocratic families lived and built. The structure itself documents the social shifts that shaped the region through different eras.

The ruins are reachable by marked trails from Spittal an der Drau, with parking available near the trailhead. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the path climbs steep terrain and the ruins themselves have uneven surfaces.

The name comes from a red tower that stood here during the 11th century, which gave the structure its distinctive identity. This ancient designation reflects its original role as a signal post and territorial marker for the region.
