Schönbühel Castle

Schönbühel Castle, Medieval castle in Schönbühel-Aggsbach, Austria

Schönbühel Castle is a medieval fortress positioned on a rocky outcrop that rises above the Danube River and marks the entrance to the Wachau region in Lower Austria. The structure commands views of the river landscape and stands as a prominent landmark of the area.

The fortress was founded in the early twelfth century by Marchwardus de Schoenbuchele and stands on a site that may have hosted a Roman military post. The location reveals a long history of human occupation and control of the Danube crossing.

The chapel on the grounds displays frescoes by a notable artist and houses a grotto with carved stone steps depicting a religious scene. These spaces reflect the site's role as a place of devotion.

The property remains under private ownership of the Seilern und Aspang family and does not permit public access to the interior or grounds. Visitors can view the castle from outside, either from the river or from nearby walking paths.

A dedicated staircase descends directly from the castle to the Danube River and was historically used by boatmen who wished to visit the chapel for prayer. This hidden connection to the water shows how closely the fortress was tied to the river and its travelers.
