Schönbühel Castle, Medieval castle in Schönbühel-Aggsbach, Austria
The castle rises 40 meters above the Danube River, positioned on a rocky outcrop that marks the entrance to the Wachau region of Lower Austria.
Originally constructed in the early twelfth century by Marchwardus de Schoenbuchele, the fortress stands on a site that potentially contained a Roman military installation.
The castle grounds include a Peregrine chapel containing frescoes by Johann Bergl and a grotto depicting the birth of Christ with carved stone steps.
The property remains under private ownership of the Seilern und Aspang family and currently does not permit interior visits or public access to the grounds.
A dedicated staircase leads from the castle directly to the Danube River, historically used by seafarers seeking to visit the church for prayer sessions.
