Schloss Seisenegg

Schloss Seisenegg, Medieval castle in Viehdorf, Austria

Schloss Seisenegg sits on a narrow ridge and features a double castle complex with a distinctive tower and a two-story chapel inside. The chapel walls are decorated with extensive frescoes that fill the interior spaces.

The fortress was built in the 12th century as a stronghold along strategic routes connecting the Ybbsfeld region and the Danube. It came under the control of Heinrich von Walsee in 1303.

The place became a center of Protestant intellectual life in the 17th century under the poet Catharina Regina von Greiffenberg, who was born there in 1633. Her literary work shaped it as an important hub of spiritual and cultural thought during that era.

Visitors should contact ahead to arrange a visit, as the site primarily hosts weddings and events rather than regular tours. Guided walks can be organized if requested in advance.

A structural collapse in 1923 left the castle partially in ruins for decades until Thomas Wassibauer began restoration work in 1991. The recovery of this endangered building represents a remarkable effort in modern preservation.
