Schloss St. Martin, Graz, Educational castle in Strassgang district, Graz, Austria
Schloss Sankt Martin is a castle on the southeastern edge of Graz, now used as an educational and conference center. It has four corner towers, a trapezoidal arcaded courtyard, and several attached wings that have been converted into seminar rooms and guest accommodation.
The site was first recorded in writing in the 11th century, when it belonged to the Aribonen family. During the 16th century, the medieval structure was rebuilt as a Renaissance castle, giving the courtyard its arcaded galleries.
The name of the castle comes from a chapel dedicated to Saint Martin that still stands on the grounds and can be visited today. The chapel offers a quiet contrast to the activity of the seminar rooms and conference spaces in the main building.
The castle sits on the edge of Graz and is easiest to reach by car, with parking available on site. Visiting during a scheduled event or guided tour is a good idea, as the interior is largely reserved for conference guests at other times.
Under the courtyard there is a former coal storage room that was turned into an art space called KuKo. The underground room hosts exhibitions and performances, making for an unexpected contrast with the old stone building above it.
