Schloss Wagrain

Schloss Wagrain, Medieval castle in Ebbs, Austria

Schloss Wagrain is a castle in Ebbs combining a square residential tower from the 14th century with a residential wing added in the late 16th century. These two sections form the structure visible today at the settlement's northern edge.

The castle was first documented in 1421 as a residence for the Lords of Ebbs and later served as a seat for judges and administrators appointed by Bavarian rulers. Administrative work shaped the building's role for generations.

The castle chapel honors the Fourteen Holy Helpers and reflects the religious role the building held within the community. The space still conveys the sense of faith woven into daily life here.

The castle sits along a tree-lined path and can be viewed from outside like other residential buildings in the area. If you wish to see inside, you will need to arrange a visit in advance with the current residents.

The castle changed hands at least seventeen times since 1550, passing from noble families to farmers and later to business owners. This turbulent ownership history reveals how the building's value and use shifted dramatically over the centuries.
