Tiroler MuseumsBahnen, Railway museum in Innsbruck, Austria.
Tiroler MuseumsBahnen is a railway museum housed in a former station building in Innsbruck that occupies multiple exhibition spaces. The collection includes around 27 historic railway vehicles, such as rail cars and locomotives that once operated on mountain routes and valley lines.
The museum was founded in 1984 to save historic railway vehicles of the Stubai Valley line from decay. It grew from efforts to document the technical heritage of mountain railways in the Tyrol region.
The name Stubaitalbahn refers to the Stubaital Valley that the rail line once served. The vehicles on display show how railways shaped connections between mountain villages and towns in this region.
The museum is open to visitors from May through October on weekends and offers guided tours through the vehicle collection. The tours explain the technical details of the historic railways and how they operated in the mountain region.
One of the most remarkable items in the collection is a working cog wheel locomotive from South Tyrol that showcases technical innovations from another mountain region. This engine shows how different solutions were developed to operate in alpine terrain.
