Friedhof Wilten, Protected cemetery in Wilten, Austria
Friedhof Wilten is a protected burial ground featuring four sections with graves arranged in organized rows and northern arcades positioned at the base of Bergisel mountain. Pathways guide visitors through the layout, connecting the different areas of this formal cemetery space.
This burial ground was established in 1876 when the parish needed more space for burials. The Wilten municipality purchased land to the south to create this new cemetery.
The chapel on the western side serves visitors as a place for quiet moments and reflection during their visit. This structure creates a focal point where people pause to remember those buried here.
The grounds are accessible and well-maintained by the Premonstratensian Abbey of Wilten. Modern facilities including a columbarium and a farewell gate are available for visitors.
During the 1964 Winter Olympics, sections of the cemetery arcades were relocated to make room for necessary changes in the surrounding area. This shows how the site adapted to its historical moment.
