Hahnenkammbahn

The Hahnenkammbahn is a cable car system in Kitzbühel that connects the town to the mountain summit, covering an elevation gain of about 878 meters (2,880 feet). The modern cabins move continuously upward and carry multiple passengers, bringing visitors from town to the peak in just a few minutes.

The cable car opened in 1928 with two large cabins that each carried 18 passengers and took 12 minutes to climb the mountain. In 1996 it was completely rebuilt, replacing the old pendulum system with the modern continuous single-cable system that operates today.

The cabins display names and flags of Hahnenkamm race winners, connecting the cable car to the town's famous ski race. New champions receive their own dedicated cabin in a ceremony, keeping the sporting history visible to everyone who rides up the mountain.

The cable car runs daily from May through November, with morning departures starting around 8:30 am and the last regular trips at 5:00 pm. Evening rides on Fridays extend to 11:00 pm, giving visitors flexibility if they want to stay on the mountain later.

The cabins feature heated seats, which might seem like a small detail but makes a real difference on cold mountain days. This comfort feature has been part of the system since its 1996 overhaul.
