Dragonerkaserne Wels, Military barracks in Wels, Austria.
Dragonerkaserne is a large military complex built around three courtyards that together span approximately 337 meters in length. The structure features brick and stone buildings arranged in a grid pattern, with the former horse stables now converted into residential spaces.
Construction of the site began in 1853 and was completed in 1858, initially serving as a garrison for the Hussar Regiment Number 8. The complex later housed different military units and underwent significant changes in how its buildings were used over the following decades.
A museum in the southern wing displays military uniforms and equipment that reflect the site's role as a cavalry garrison. These artifacts help visitors understand the daily life and traditions of the regiments that were stationed here.
The site is accessible for walking, giving a sense of the original military layout, though many areas are now private residences. The museum section is located in an easy-to-find area, allowing visitors to explore the historical exhibits without complex navigation.
After World War II until 1955, the stables housed horses from the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. This unexpected use of the site demonstrates how the facilities were adapted for entirely different purposes during a difficult period.
