Wels, Statutory city in Upper Austria, Austria

Wels is a city in Upper Austria that spreads along the Traun River at the edge of the Eastern Alps, combining built-up districts with surrounding farmland. It serves as a district capital and blends urban life with rural surroundings across roughly 46 square kilometers.

The settlement began as a Celtic community before becoming the Roman town of Ovilava in the year 120 and serving as capital of the province of Noricum Ripensis. During the Middle Ages it grew as a trading hub and later received town rights that solidified its importance in the region.

The Latin name Ovilava recalls its Roman roots, while today the old town invites strolling with colorful townhouses and open squares. Local markets and small shops shape the streetscape and offer a glimpse into daily life here.

The central location with rail connections makes arriving easy, and the trade fair center attracts visitors to events and exhibitions throughout the year. The town center is easy to explore on foot, as the main sights lie close together.

The former castle was the site where Emperor Maximilian I spent his final days and passed away in January 1519. This connection lends the building a special significance for European history.
