Schloss Wasserhof, Medieval castle in Krems an der Donau, Austria
Schloss Wasserhof is a medieval castle in Gneixendorf, a district of Krems an der Donau in Austria. The main building is a two-story rectangular structure with a three-story central tower that breaks up the facade.
The castle was first recorded in 1209, making it one of the oldest documented noble residences in the region. Work carried out between 1725 and 1730 gave it the baroque form that can still be seen today.
Schloss Wasserhof sits in the Gneixendorf district, a quiet area on the edge of Krems. The name references its location near water sources, which was a key factor in choosing building sites in this part of the Danube valley.
The castle is privately owned and not open to visitors. Those who want to see it from the outside can walk through the Gneixendorf area, as the building is visible from public paths nearby.
A restoration carried out between 2011 and 2015 secured the building's historical elements while adapting it for modern use. This makes it one of the few examples in the region where old fabric and new requirements have been directly combined.
