Stollen der Erinnerung, Historical museum in Steyr, Austria
The Stollen der Erinnerung is a tunnel system in Steyr that spans roughly 140 meters and served as an air raid shelter during World War II. The underground network has been converted into a memorial site with exhibitions documenting the National Socialist period.
The tunnel system was built in 1943 by concentration camp prisoners to provide shelter during air raids. After the war, the site was transformed into a memorial museum preserving this history.
The exhibition displays photographs, documents, and personal accounts detailing forced labor experiences and resistance movements in the Steyr region. Visitors encounter the voices and stories of people who lived through this period.
Visitors should wear warm clothing, as tunnel temperatures remain between 8 and 12 degrees Celsius. Admission is through Museum Arbeitswelt, where you can purchase tickets and prepare for your underground visit.
The exhibition incorporates tactile elements and offers guided tours in simplified language, making historical education accessible to diverse visitors. This approach enables people of different abilities to explore the history in their own way.
