Locks of Lanaye

The Lanaye locks system includes four locks of different sizes, with the largest measuring 225 meters in length and 25 meters in width.

The construction of the fourth and largest lock began in June 2011 and reached completion in 2015, marking a major expansion of the waterway infrastructure.

The locks form an essential connection point between Belgian and Dutch waterways, enabling maritime transport toward major ports like Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

The lock complex processes over 9 million tons of cargo annually, operating with a pumping station that maintains water levels during low-flow periods.

The facility includes a hydroelectric power plant that generates renewable energy from the Meuse River flow when conditions permit.
