Locks of Lanaye, Navigation lock complex in Visé, Belgium
The Locks of Lanaye are a lock system in Visé comprising four structures of varying sizes to accommodate different vessel types. The largest lock measures approximately 225 meters in length and 25 meters in width.
Construction of the fourth and largest lock began in June 2011 and was completed in 2015, marking a major expansion of the waterway infrastructure. This project was part of a long-term initiative to improve navigation on the Meuse River.
The locks link Belgian and Dutch waterways, allowing boats to travel between inland routes and international ports. For the region, they represent a visible sign of cross-border cooperation in shipping.
The facility processes over 9 million tons of cargo annually and operates a pumping station to maintain water levels during low-flow periods. Visitors can observe the lock system from several viewpoints along the river.
The facility includes a hydroelectric power plant that generates electricity from the Meuse River flow when conditions permit. This energy source helps power the system and reduces environmental impact.
