Achtzalighedenboom, Protected monument tree in Lille, Belgium.
The Achtzalighedenboom is a pine tree with an irregular, multi-stemmed form located near Rollekensberg within the forests close to Lille. The tree's structure reflects its age and the natural growth patterns that shaped it over many decades.
The tree emerged around 1850 and was later documented in a 1910 publication cataloging Belgium's most notable trees. Its growth rings show continuous development across multiple generations.
The name Achtzalighedenboom refers to Christ's eight Beatitudes and connects to the tree's original eight trunks, linking nature with religious meaning. This naming reflects how local tradition combines spiritual symbolism with the natural world.
The tree is accessible via marked forest paths running between cycling points 80 and 53 as well as walking nodes 89 and 92. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the forest trails can be uneven.
A severe storm in March 2013 caused substantial damage to the tree, yet its rings reveal growth dating back to 1824. Despite this destruction, its core structure endured, showing how nature can withstand extreme weather.
