Maison du Renard, Historical building at Grand Place, Belgium
Maison du Renard is a baroque house on Brussels' Grand Place featuring a white stone facade arranged in three levels across four bays. The front is decorated with elaborate sculptures including allegorical figures and ornamental details throughout its design.
The building was constructed in 1699 following the bombardment of Brussels in 1695 and served as headquarters for the mercers guild. This trade association used it for their business activities until the 18th century.
The facade displays detailed bas-reliefs by Marc de Vos showing medieval trade scenes such as cloth measuring and glove selling. These works reflect the activities that merchants who lived here carried out over many generations.
The building is located at number 7 on the main square between two other historic houses and offers direct access to Brussels' central plaza. Its exact position makes it easy to spot and reach when exploring the city center.
The facade bears the inscription 'In den vos' and displays a fox emblem created by artist Julien Dillens. The symbolic representation is completed by statues of Justice and figures representing the four known continents.
