St. Nicholas church, Baroque church in Eupen, Belgium
Saint Nicholas Church is a baroque church in Eupen with three naves supported by fourteen pillars. The central section features a dome-shaped groin vault that defines the interior space.
Municipal architect Laurenz Mefferdatis designed and built the church from 1721 to 1729. The south tower incorporated parts of an earlier 12th-century structure into the new design.
The interior features 84 oak pews created between 1730 and 1850, with inscribed names showing donations from local benefactors. These furnishings connect the congregation to their faith and the place's role in town life.
The church sits on Marktplatz in central Eupen with wheelchair accessibility throughout. Regular services welcome both worshippers and visitors interested in the building.
The high altar was created by Aachen architect Johann Joseph Couven from 1740 to 1744 and funded by local cloth merchants. Its intricate carvings showcase the craftsmanship of that era.
