Schloss Thal, Castle in Kettenis, Belgium
Schloss Thal is a countryside castle in Eupen featuring a symmetrical main building that extends over two floors with five axes on the entry side. The garden facade presents seven axes and a distinctive rotunda, while lower extensions on the sides complete the composition.
Construction of the castle took place from 1754 to 1757 under the direction of Reiner Franz von Grand Ry, who served as mayor of Eupen at the time. Over the following centuries, the building served multiple functions including a gendarmerie post, hotel, and holiday camp.
The castle served as home to weaving families who lived and worked within its walls for extended periods. The everyday presence of these craftspeople and their families left visible marks on the interior spaces that remain part of the building's character today.
The castle is easily accessible by car with parking available nearby. The interior spaces can be visited, while the exterior and garden layout are also worthwhile to view from outside if internal access is not possible.
The original wallpapers from the castle were sold during an estate auction in 1850 and are now preserved in the Verviers Museum. These wall decorations offer a glimpse into the luxury style that the original owners preferred for their residence.
