Brussels Stock Exchange
Brussels Stock Exchange, Monument in central Brussels, Belgium
The Brussels Stock Exchange is an eclectically designed building featuring neo-Renaissance and Second Empire elements, richly decorated with sculptures, columns, and a prominent central dome. Inside, you'll find exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, an archaeological site displaying remains from a 13th-century Franciscan convent, and a rooftop bar with dining facilities.
Napoleon's decree in 1801 initiated the establishment of this exchange, though the building in its current form was completed in 1873 after the institution relocated multiple times. These moves reflected the growing importance of financial trading in the city.
The building houses the Belgian Beer World museum since 2023, showcasing the history and traditions of Belgian brewing. Visitors can explore exhibits about how different regions developed their own beer styles and techniques.
The building is easily accessible on foot as it sits in the heart of the old city, and visitors should allow time to explore both the museum and rooftop bar. The archaeological site inside requires careful navigation through different levels, so wear comfortable shoes.
Beneath the building's floor level, remains of a medieval Franciscan convent have been preserved and are open to visitors, revealing layers of the city's religious past. These archaeological findings show how older structures lie hidden under modern commercial spaces.
